Basato su una storia di fantascienza di Alexander Greene, scrittore sovietico morto durante le epurazioni staliniane, Izbavitelj è una potente allegoria politica, che in qualche modo prefigura il più conosciuto “Rhinocéros” di Ionesco. Ambientata negli anni ’30 a Zagabria, la trama è una variante di quella de L’invasione degli ultracorpi (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956). Vidovic è lo scrittore vagabondo che scopre che una nuova specie di ratti con la capacità di cambiare forma sta conquistando la città, uccidendo e poi impersonando le proprie vittime. Vidovic elimina i ratti con una sostanza chimica fornitagli dallo scienziato di Sovagovic, ma non prima di aver ucciso la donna che ama convinto che sia una donna-ratto. Il carattere allegorico del film è piuttosto confuso – i ratti sembrano rappresentare una forma di fascismo troppo generalizzato – ma la regia di Papic (che ha permesso al film di vincere l’Asteroide d’Oro all’edizione del 1977 del Festival della Fantascienza di Trieste) è notevole e molte delle sequenze sono piuttosto grafiche e viscerali, con uno stile insolito per la realizzazione di un film dell’Est Europa.
Based on a Science Fiction story by Alexander Greene, a Soviet writer who died in Stalin’s purges, Izbavitelj is a powerful political allegory, which in many ways foreshadows Ionesco’s much better known “Rhinocéros”. Set in Zagreb in the thirties, the plot is a variant on that of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). Vidovic is the vagrant writer who discovers that a new breed of rats, with the ability to change their shape, are taking over the city by killing and then impersonating their victims. He eliminates the rats with a chemical provided by Sovagovic’s scientist but not before he’s killed the girl he loves, believing that she is a rat-person. The allegorical character of the film is somewhat confusing, as the rats seeem to represent an over-generalized form of fascism – but Papic’s direction (which won the film a Golden Asteroid at the 1977 Trieste festival of Science Fiction films) is dramatic and several of the sequences are quite graphic and visceral in a manner that is unusual in Eastern European film-making.
