La fantascienza oltre a creare visioni fantastiche genera anche immagini verosimili del futuro. Ma possono essere considerate previsioni o sono mere speculazioni? La futurologia si pone nel mezzo e sfrutta gli spunti offerti dalla fantascienza per immaginare una molteplicità di futuri possibili. In questo modo si possono valutare gli impatti delle tecnologie e migliorare le decisioni fatte nel presente. Wenzel Mehnert, futurologo dell’Austrian Institute of Technology, dialogherà sull’intersezione fra le narrazioni speculative e l’etica di tecnologie come l’intelligenza artificiale e la biologia sintetica.

Prediction or imagination? Comparing science fiction and futurology

Besides creating science fictional visions, science fiction also generates plausible images of the future. But can they be considered as predictions or are they mere speculations? Futurology stands in between and uses the cues offered by science fiction to imagine a multitude of possible futures. It is a way of assessing the impact of technology, and improving the decisions we are making in our present time. Wenzel Mehnert, futurologist from the Austrian Institute of Technology, will speak about the interconnections between speculative narrations and the ethics of technologies such as AI and synthetic biology.
