Da Isaac a Elon: il nostro futuro è fra le stelle?

Il leggendario Ciclo della Fondazione di Isaac Asimov dipinge un lontano futuro in cui l’umanità ha conquistato la Galassia. A questo e ad altri classici della fantascienza si ispirano i nuovi baroni dello spazio nella loro corsa a colonizzare Marte, primo passo verso la creazione, sostengono, di una specie interplanetaria. Tali ambizioni si fondono e si confondono con il ruolo che l’intelligenza artificiale, e altre idee finora fantascientifiche come i robot umanoidi e il trasferimento della coscienza su piattaforme non-biologiche, giocano nel panorama contemporaneo di accelerazione tecnologica esponenziale. Esploreremo questi temi per comprendere assieme se e quale futuro ci possa essere per l’umanità fra le stelle.

From Isaac to Elon: is our future in the stars?

The legendary Foundation series by Isaac Asimov pictures a distant future in which mankind has conquered the Galaxy. This, and other classics of science fiction, are the inspiration for the new space barons in their run to colonise Mars, the first step towards the creation – as they say – of an interplanetary species. These ambitions mix and merge with artificial intelligence, and with other ideas which so far have only been science fictional, such as human-like robots and the transfer of human consciousness to non-biological platforms, concepts which play a key role in the contemporary landscape of exponential technological acceleration. We will explore these themes together to understand whether there is a future (and what it may be like) for mankind among the stars.

Roberto Trotta è professore di Fisica teorica alla SISSA, dove è responsabile del gruppo di Scienza e Teoria dei Dati, e visiting professor di Astrostatistica all’Imperial College di Londra. La sua ricerca si concentra su cosmologia, apprendimento automatico e scienza dei dati, con applicazioni alla cosmologia dell’universo primordiale, e lo studio della materia e dell’energia oscure È stato insignito della Cattedra Lemaître 2018 dell’Università di Louvain per il suo lavoro sull’astrostatistica. Autore e comunicatore scientifico pluripremiato, ha ricevuto la medaglia Annie Maunder 2020 della Royal Astronomical Society per il suo impegno pubblico. Il suo ultimo libro, Starborn (Basic Book, 2023), è stato nominato Book of the Week dalla BBC.

Roberto Trotta is professor of Theoretical Physics at SISSA, where he is responsible for the group of Science and Theory of Data, and visiting professor of Astrostatistics at the Imperial College of London. His research focuses on cosmology, machine learning and data science, with applications on the cosmology of the primordial universe, and on the study of dark matter and energies. He was assigned the Lemaître Chair 2018 by the University of Louvain for his work in astrostatistics. Awarded author and scientific communicator, he has received the Annie Maunder Medal 2020 by the Royal Astronomical Society for his public commitment. His last book, Starborn (Basic Book, 2023), was nominated Book of the Week by BBC.
