Trieste Science+Fiction Festival celebrates the golden years of Italian genre cinema with three of the great protagonists of that era: Aldo Lado, Fabio Frizzi and Francesco Barilli.
ALDO LADO CELEBRATES THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS MOVIE L’UMANOIDE (The Humanoid)
Trieste Science+Fiction Festival prepares to welcome Aldo Lado, iconic director of ‘70s movies such as Chi l’ha vista morire? (Who Saw Her Die?), La corta notte delle bambole di vetro (Short Night of Glass Dolls) andL’Ultimo treno della notte(Last Stop on the Night Train). He will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of his sci-fi movie L’umanoide (The Humanoid,1979), directed under the pseudonym George B. Lewis, which will be screened in a rare vintage 35mm copy provided by the Bologna Film Library: an iconic Italian sci-fi movie starring Corinne Cléry, Barbara Bach and Trieste actor Ivan Rassimov playing Lord Graal, with special effects by Antonio Margheriti and music by Ennio Morricone.
Born in Rijeka in 1934, Aldo Lado grew up in Venice. He has written and made twenty odd feature films for the big screen and more than sixty for TV, becoming famous as one of the main authors of the Italian giallo genre. He comes back to Trieste where he shot for Rai the TV series La città di Miriam, based on the novel by Istrian writer Fulvio Tomizza. He has been writing literature now for a few years and his short stories have been published in a number of collections. In September 2019 he won second prize in the Gialli Ceresio competition with the unreleased short story Il Luccio.
FABIO FRIZZI, FULCI’S COMPOSER, MEMBER OF THE JURY
Trieste Science+Fiction Festival has asked famous Italian composer and author of soundtracks Fabio Frizzi to be a member of the jury of the Méliès Award of the Méliès International Festivals Federation. Older brother of well-known TV presenter Fabrizio Frizzi, he is one of Lucio Fulci’s long-standing collaborators. For him, he composed the soundtracks of iconic movies like Zombi 2 (Zombie), Paura nella città dei morti viventi (City of the Living Dead), I quattro dell’apocalisse (The Four of the Apocalypse), …E tu vivrai nel terrore! L’aldilà (The Beyond).
The big success arrived in 1975 thanks to the soundtrack of Fantozzi. In 2012, Frizzi staged the musical project “F2F – Frizzi To Fulci”, a “rock orchestra” of 8 elements he directs performing the soundtracks the maestro composed for director Lucio Fulci’s horror films. In 2003, Quentin Tarantino included a track composed by Frizzi in the soundtrack of Kill Bill: Volume 1, from Fulci’s 1977 movie Sette Note in Nero (The Psychic).
THE REMAKE OF BAZZONI’S L’URLO (THE SCREAM)
The short film L’Urlo by Francesco Barilli will be screened on Saturday, November 2nd at 14:00 hrs at the Miela Theatre. Francesco Barilli is a painter, director and a screenwriter; as an actor he starred in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Prima della rivoluzione (Before the Revolution) and was cast by Mauro Bolognini, Carlos Saura and Carlo Vanzina. L’Urlo is the remake of the movie by the same title Camillo Bazzoni made in 1966, produced and photographed by Vittorio Storaro, starring Barilli himself, set in a dystopic future, successfully presented at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival, special award for Storaro at the Nastri d’Argento and also screened at what was then called Trieste International Science Fiction Film Festival. Bazzoni’s L’urlo was the first of a science fiction trilogy together with Invasione and La caduta di Varema, a clear reference to Orwell.
