International co-production is by now an inescapable practice in today’s film industry, and this process is being further accelerated by the policies of the European Union and of the new Creative Europe MEDIA Programme. This set of case studies is meant to look into several examples of co-production practices throughout Europe, and into the peculiarities they take on in different areas of the continent.

Eastern Europe and the American connection: “The Deal”
Thanks to low costs, regional fundings and tax rebates, Eastern Europe has long been a popular location for international (and particularly US) film productions. During the last few years, this practice has become more and more common and has brought about a constant and deeper cooperation with US cinema. “The Deal”, shot and produced in the Balkans with US financings, is a very good example of this practice, that will be discussed with its Hungarian director Orsi Nagypál.

“Flowing” and the return of Italian genre to the international scene
After decades of isolation, Italian genre cinema is starting to seriously deal with international co-production and trying to get into step with European film industries. Starting from a case study of “Flowing”, an overview of genre cinema in Italy and of its international outlook.

The Northern Europe connection: “Memory of Water”
Northern Europe has been strongly supporting the genre film industry for years now. This policy is engaging many European and non-EU countries, and has brought about dozens of internationally acclaimed hits. The latest of these, “Memory of Water”, will be analysed here by its Finnish director and producer.

From Lithuania to Europe: “Vesper”
Thanks to a policy of strong support to the audiovisual industry, in a very few years Lithuania has shifted from a marginal position to a key role in international co-production. This has brought about a great development in the local film industry, and spawned great and visually stunning movies – such as “Vesper”, presented here by its Lithuanian directors and producers.
