Koichi e Atsumi sono innamorati e si conoscono fin da quando erano bambini. Un anno fa, Atsumi ha apparentemente tentato di suicidarsi e da allora è in coma. Attraverso il “sensing”, un trattamento neurologico che consente la comunicazione con pazienti in coma, Koichi cerca di scoprire perché Atsumi ha tentato di uccidersi e la sprona a risvegliarsi. Pur spaventato dall’idea di avventurarsi in questo modo nell’inconscio della ragazza, Koichi è disperatamente deciso a risvegliarla e decide di sperimentare lui stesso il “sensing”. Così lei gli appare alla sua scrivania, mentre disegna manga dalla mattina alla sera. “Alle elementari”, dice improvvisamente, “ho disegnato per te un plesiosauro. Lo voglio. Era perfetto. Lo trovi per me?”
Nato nel 1955 in Giappone, Kurosawa ha iniziato a girare film in 8mm quando era studente. Nel 1998 il suo thriller Cure è stato presentato al Festival Internazionale di Rotterdam. Successivamente ha girato diversi thriller e horror come Charisma (1999), Seance (2000) che ha vinto il FIPRESCI nella sezione Un Certain Regard a Cannes, e Pulse (2001). Nel 2003 Bright Future è stato selezionato nel concorso ufficiale del Festival di Cannes, mentre Tokyo Sonata (2008) ha vinto il premio della giura in Un Certain Regard. La sua serie televisiva Penance è stata presentata alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia e al Festival Internazionale di Toronto nel 2012.
Koichi and Atsumi are lovers who have known each other since they were children. One year ago, Atsumi apparently tried to commit suicide, and has been in a coma since then. Through “sensing”, a type of neurological treatment allowing comunication with a comatose patient, Koichi tries to find out why she tried to kill herself, and to encourage her to wake up. Afraid of what he may find by going into her unconscious this way, but desperate to help bring her around, he undertakes the “sensing”. There he sees her at her desk, drawing manga comics from morning till night. “In primary school”, she suddenly says, “I drew you a picture of a plesiosaur. I want it. It was perfect. Will you find it for me?
Born in 1955 in Japan, Kurosawa began making 8mm films while a student. In 1998, his thriller Cure (1997) was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. A number of other thrillers and horror films followed, such as Charisma (1999), Seance (2000), which won the FIPRESCI Prize at Un Certain Regard, and Pulse (2001). In 2003, Bright Future was selected in Competition at Cannes, while Tokyo Sonata (2008) won the Jury prize at Un Certain Regard. His TV series Penance was also screened at the Festival in Venice and the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012.
