Kazakistan, all’inizio del 1961. Daniel Pokrovsky, un ufficiale medico, attualmente lavora per la prima truppa di cosmonauti sovietici. Qui Daniel, già sposato, inizia una relazione incredibilmente complicata con una ragazza, chiamata Vera. Più tardi Daniel torna a Mosca, dove si occupa della salute dei futuri cosmonauti. Cerca di non essere solo un medico per i cadetti, ma anche il loro amico e non riesce ad accettare il fatto che questi giovani possano sacrificare la loro vita per il paese. Sua moglie Nina pensa la stessa cosa, non accetta che il marito partecipi a un progetto che potrebbe mettere a rischio vite umane e continua a chiedere a Daniel di lasciare il suo lavoro. Daniel decide invece di lasciare la moglie. Quando uno dei cadetti muore, l’ufficiale medico finisce per crollare.
Kazakhstan, early 1961. Daniel Pokrovsky, a medical officer, currently works for the first Soviet cosmonauts’ troop. Already married, Daniel finds himself in an incredibly complicated and yet beautiful relationship with a young girl, called Vera. Later, Daniel goes back to Moscow where he is in charge of the health of the future cosmonauts. He tries not to be just a doctor for the cadets, but also their friend. Nevertheless, he can’t agree with the fact that these young men might have to sacrifice their lives for their country, and his wife Nina feels the same: she doesn’t want him to be involved in something that could put peoples lives at risk, and for this, she keeps asking Daniel to leave his job. Daniel decides to leave his wife instead. When soon after one of his cadets dies, the medical officer starts to break down.
