La polizia è alla ricerca di uno psicopatico evaso dall’ospedale psichiatrico, il quale sembrerebbe essere responsabile dell’omicidio di una donna. Intanto una ragazza, impegnata nel furto di una bambola, viene avvicinata da un misterioso individuo. Terzo e penultimo capitolo della serie, a detta di alcuni il meno riuscito, non possiede la carica emotiva dei precedenti episodi, non essendoci veri momenti di suspense, salvo durante la scena nella sartoria, mentre la tensione è praticamente assente per tutta la durata del film. Più che a spaventare lo spettatore, gli autori della sceneggiatura sono interessati a creargli l’illusione di assistere ad un certo svolgimento dei fatti, ricorrendo ad un montaggio ingannevole e all’uso di soggettive tipiche di Argento. In questo senso, si veda anche la lunga soggettiva con cinepresa a spalla che apre l’episodio, la quale, tra l’altro, è molto simile al prologo del successivo Halloween – La notte delle streghe di John Carpenter.
The police are looking for an psychopath who has escaped from the psychiatric hospital and who appears to be responsible for the murder of a woman. Meanwhile, a girl, engaged in the theft of a doll, is approached by a mysterious individual. The third and penultimate chapter in the series, by some accounts the least successful, lacks the emotional charge of the previous episodes, as there are no real moments of suspense, except for the scene in the tailor’s shop, while tension is practically absent throughout the film. Rather than frightening the viewer, the authors of the screenplay are interested in creating the illusion that they are witnessing a certain unfolding of events, resorting to deceptive editing and the use of Argento’s typical subjectivities. In this sense, see also the long subjective shot with a shoulder-mounted camera that opens the episode, which, by the way, is very similar to the prologue of John Carpenter’s later Halloween – Night of the Witches.
