La narrazione ha per centro un affresco. E’ un martirio di S. Sebastiano in gran parte ricoperto dalla muffa. Stefano, un restauratore, è stato incaricato di provvedere al suo ripristino. L’affresco è posto all’interno di una chiesa di un paese del ferrarese. Stefano scopre immediatamente che qualcuno vuole che il restauro venga fatto. Vecchie storie, vecchie leggende, alcune delle quali terribili, riprendono vita, riprendono corpo credibilità nel corso del lavoro. Si scopre cosi che l’autore del dipinto aveva due sorelle, due vecchie pazze, legate da uno strano amore al fratello. Dopo la morte del pittore, le due vecchie avevano continuato le loro abitudini praticando singolari riti macabri al fine di ridare vita al cadavere del fratello defunto.
The story centres around a fresco that depicts the martyring of Saint Sebastiano. Stefano has been charged with the restoration of the fresco, which is now largely covered in mould in a small village church. He quickly learns that someone wants the restoration done when old stories and legends, some quite terrible, come to life while he is working. We learn that the fresco’s painter had two mad old sisters who harboured some strange love for their brother. After his death, the sisters continued in their weird ways, conducting macabre rituals as to try and revive the corpse of their deceased brother.
