L’alieno. Quando l’invasione non arriva dallo spazio

Sta creando danni alla pesca e sta stravolgendo gli equilibri degli ecosistemi marini. Dall’Atlantico, il granchio blu ha ormai invaso le acque del Mediterraneo. Ma non è la sola specie aliena che sta infestando i nostri mari. Paola Del Negro, direttrice generale dell’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, ci guida nei fondali marini dove la comparsa di nuove specie provenienti da mari lontani, come per esempio la noce di mare e il pesce scoiattolo, è sempre più evidente. Anche la vongola che oggi viene pescata lungo le nostre coste è una specie aliena. La presenza di questi organismi sta alterando gli habitat con ripercussioni sui delicati equilibri naturali, ma anche sulle attività economiche, ricreative e turistiche, e, come nel caso della vongola e della noce di mare, anche sulla nostra alimentazione.

The alien. When the invasion is not from space

It’s damaging the fishing industry and upsetting the balance of marine ecosystems. From the Atlantic, the blue crab has invaded the waters of the Mediterranean. But it is not the only alien species that has invaded our seas. Paola Del Negro, general director of the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, will guide us to the bottom of the seas where the arrival of new species from distant seas, as for instance the sea walnut and the redcoat, is getting more and more evident. Even the clam which we nowadays fish along our coasts is an alien species. The presence of these organisms is altering the habitats, with consequences that impact the delicate natural balance, and the economical, leisure and touristic activities as well, and, as in the case of the clam and of the sea walnut, also our diet.

Laureata in Scienze biologiche, con un dottorato in Scienze ambientali e master in Acquacoltura, dal 2012 al 2018 Paola Del Negro è stata direttrice della sezione di Oceanografia dell’Istituto nazionale di oceanografia e di geofisica sperimentale – OGS. Dal 2018 è direttrice generale dell’OGS. Ha svolto attività di ricerca in ecologia microbica ed è autrice di più di 100 pubblicazioni scientifiche. Ha partecipato a numerose campagne oceanografiche, sia in Mar Adriatico sia in Antartide. Ha coordinato progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali.

With a degree in Biological Sciences, a PhD in Environmental Sciences and a master in Aquacolture, from 2012 to 2018 Paola Del Negro has been the director of the section of Oceanography of the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS. From 2018 she serves as general director of OGS. She has carried out research activity in microbial ecology and she is the author of more than 100 scientific papers. She has participated to many oceanographic campaigns, both in the Adriatic Sea and in Antarctica. She has worked as coordinator of several national and international research projects.
